In Islam, Jesus (Isa) is a revered prophet, born to Mary through Allah’s command. He performed miracles, but is not divine. The Quran denies his crucifixion, stating he was raised to heaven. Jesus is expected to return before the Day of Judgment to restore justice.

Jesus (PBUH) was mentioned in the Holy Quran twenty-five times. He is a single human being and a slave of Allah, His Creator.

Jesus was one of the five great Messengers Allah sent to mankind. Allah revealed the Gospels book to him. He (PBUH) is Allah’s Messenger to Israelites. He is like Adam, created from mud. He neither is a God nor a son of God. He is a slave to Allah, he preached Allah’s monotheism and called mankind for mercy and justice.

In this article, we will define Jesus as he was mentioned in Islam. The religion of Islam consists of the Holy Quran and as-Sunnah an-Nabawyiah. So, we will introduce Jesus as he was mentioned in the Holy Quran and Sunnah. Go no further

Who is Jesus in Islam?

In Islam, Jesus is recognized as a revered prophet, a “Word from Allah,” created miraculously like Adam through God’s command. The Quran highlights his status as a well-respected figure, bestowed with clear miracles and the Holy Spirit’s support.

His disciples were his staunch supporters, and Jesus is always referred to as the “son of Mary,” emphasizing his humanity. Islam also confirms that Jesus was neither crucified nor killed but was raised by Allah and will return before the Day of Judgment to fulfill his divine mission.

Prophet Muhammad is reported in the Sunnah to be most akin to Jesus, with a strong spiritual connection between them. Jesus was protected from Satan, an exception among all humans.

His second coming, as foretold, will see him return as a just ruler who will correct misconceptions, break the Cross, and bring peace and abundance to the world. These Islamic views emphasize Jesus’s special role in the divine plan while reaffirming his human nature and prophetic mission.

In the following sections, we will present some Islamic facts about Jesus in Islam as they were mentioned in both of the Holy Quran and the Prophetic Sunnah. Keep reading.

Facts About Jesus In Islam

Let’s start with what has been mentioned in the Holy Quran about Jesus (the Messiah).

1. Jesus is a Word from Allah

Allah says is the Quran:

“The Angels said, “O Mary, God gives you good news of a Word from Him. His name is the Messiah, Jesus, son of Mary.”

Ali-Imran 45

The phrase “Jesus is the word of God” means that he was created by a word from Allah which was (Be). El-Imam Ahmad said, “He gave it to Mary when he said to him, “Be” so Jesus comes to be.

“His command, when He wills a thing, is to say to it, “Be,” and it comes to be.”

Ya’Seen 83.

2. Jesus is Well-Esteemed

Allah says in the Quran:

“His name is the Messiah, Jesus, son of Mary, well-esteemed in this world and the next, and one of the nearest.”

Ali-Imran 45

Based on the Holy Quran’s statement, Jesus was a well-bred cherished man. He also was respectable and honorable. He was one of the nearest people to Allah the Almighty.

3. Jesus Was Given Clear Proofs

Allah says in the Quran:

“We gave Jesus, son of Mary, the clear miracles, and We strengthened him with the Holy Spirit.”

Surah al-Baqarah 253.

That means Jesus, the son of Mary, (Eben Maryam), was given the clear proof of his prophecy. Allah granted him miracles and gave him strength through sending him the angel “Gabriel” and supporting him with the Holy Spirit.

4. Jesus’ Allies are the Disciples

Allah says in the Quran:

“When Jesus sensed disbelief on their part, he said, “Who are my allies towards God?” The disciples said, “We are God’s allies; we have believed in God, and bear witness that we submit.”

Ali-Imran 53.

Jesus asked his followers, “Who are my supporters (Ansari) to God? Who are my advocates towards Allah’s law and His commands? The Disciples said,” We are.”Thus, the family of faith should be the supporters and partisans of prophets and their messages.

5. Jesus Was Created by Allah

Allah says in the Quran:

“The likeness of Jesus in God’s sight is that of Adam: He created him from dust, then said to him, “Be,” and he was.”

Ali-Imran 59.

Jesus’ strange state of birth is the same way as Adam’s, “Both were created without a father, furthermore Adam was created without a mother.”  Both of them were created by Allah. This wise verse of the Holy Quran is a logical reply to those who believe in the divinity of Jesus, or those who claim to be the son of God.

6. Jesus Was Neither Killed nor Crucified

Allah says in the Quran:

“And for their saying, “We have killed the Messiah, Jesus, the son of Mary, the Messenger of God.” In fact, they did not kill him, nor did they crucify him, but it appeared to them as if they did.”

an-Nisa 157.

Muslim scholars totally agree that Jesus was not crucified, rather, it only appeared to Jews as if he was crucified. The fact is that Allah raised him alive up to Heaven. He shall stay there until the second coming.

7. Jesus is Always Called by “Son of Mary”

Allah says in the Quran:

“When God will say, “O Jesus son of Mary, recall My favor upon you and upon your mother.”

al-Ma’idah,110.

Wherever Jesus is mentioned in the Quran, he is mentioned in his mother’s name, clearly indicating that he is a human being not a son of God.

8. Jesus is Allah’s Messenger to Israelites

Allah says in the Quran:

“And when Jesus, son of Mary said, “O Children of Israel, I am God’s Messenger to you, confirming what preceded me of the Torah, and announcing good news of a messenger who will come after me, whose name is Ahmad.”

as-Saff, 6.

The Quran stated that Jesus is a Messenger to the Israelites. He preached a messenger who would come after him, whose name is Ahmad. This Messenger is the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him).

9. Jesus Had Great Miracles by Allah’s Leave

Allah says in the Quran:

“You spoke to the people from the crib, and in maturity. How I taught you the Scripture and wisdom, and the Torah and the Gospel. And recall that you molded from clay the shape of a bird, by My leave, and then you breathed into it, and it became a bird, by My leave. And you healed the blind and the leprous, by My leave; and you revived the dead, by My leave.”

al-Ma’idah,110.

All kinds of supernatural things Jesus did, (such as resurrecting the dead and creating birds of clay) are by God’s will and God’s power.

10. Jesus Testifies, “I am Not a God”

Allah says in the Quran:

“And God will say, “O Jesus, son of Mary, did you say to the people, ‘Take me and my mother as gods rather than God? “He will say, “Glory be to You! It is not for me to say what I have no right to.”

al-Ma’idah, 116.

Allah would ask Jesus if he had told people to make him a God, Jesus would state that he had never done it. When Jesus was born, he spoke from the cradle and stated he is not a God.

He said, “I am the servant of God. He has given me the Scripture, and made me a prophet.” Maryam, 30.

11. Jesus Dies as All Human Beings Die

Allah says in the Quran:

“God said, “O Jesus, I am terminating your life, and raising you to Me, and clearing you of those who disbelieve.”

Ali-Imran, 55.

Jesus was not killed by the Jews, rather Allah the Highest protected him and raised him up to heaven alive. Allah will send him back at the second coming for a new particular mission; after fulfilling it, he would die as all human beings die.

12. Prophet Muhammad is the Most Akin to Jesus

Allah’s Messenger said: “I am most akin to Jesus Christ among the whole of mankind, and all the Prophets are of different mothers but belong to one religion and no Prophet was raised between me and Jesus.” Abu Huraira. Hadiths about Jesus can be found on this site.

Prophet Mohammed (PBUH) states that he is the most identical, equivalent and the nearest prophet to Jesus as the time distance between them was close. And the similarity of the prophets’ qualities is alike.

13. Prophet Jesus is Protected from Satan

Abu Huraira reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “No person is born but that he is pricked by Satan and he cries from the touch of Satan, except for the son of Mary and his mother.” Abu Huraira said, “Recite the verse if you wish: Verily, I seek refuge for her and her offspring from the cursed Satan.”

al-Bukhārī 3431.

Prophet Mohammed states that every child is clashed by the devil except one child, who was Jesus as Allah protected him from the devil.

14. Jesus Will Descend at The Second Coming

“Allah’s Apostle said, “By Him in Whose Hands my soul is, son of Mary (Jesus) will shortly descend amongst you people (Muslims) as a just ruler and will break the Cross and kill the pig and abolish the Jizya. Then there will be an abundance of money and no-body will accept charitable gifts.” Abu Huraira 425. The full hadith can be viewed here.

In this Hadith, our Prophet Muhammad predicts what will happen at the end of time when Jesus will descend for the second coming. He will break the Cross, and render justice in the whole world.
