SUMMARY:

Islam teaches belief in all 124,000 prophets sent by God to preach monotheism. While only 25 are explicitly named in the Qur'an, Muslims must believe in all of them as part of their faith.

Islam believes in all the Prophets sent by Almighty God to call people to the oneness of God, and to avoid associating partners with Him. Still, only a limited group of them are mentioned by name in the Quran. Almighty God says:

“We already sent messengers before you. We have told you the stories of some of them, while others we have not.”

(Qur’an 40:78).

When Prophet Muhammad was asked about the number of Prophets and Messengers, he ﷺ said:

“One hundred thousand, twenty-four thousand, and the messengers among them were three hundred and fifteen, a large group.”

[Hadith Sahih]

The Quran mentions 25 Names of Muslim Prophets that Almighty God selected to spread his message to mankind.

The 25 Prophets are:

Adam, Idris, Nuh, Hud, Saleh, Ibrahim, Lut, Ishmael, Ishaq, Yaqub, Yusuf, Ayyub, Shuaib, Musa, Harun, Dhul-Kifl, Dawod, Sulaiman, Ilyas, Al-Yasa, Yunus, Zakareyah, Yahya, Isa, and Muhammed.

1. Prophet Adam (PBUH)

Prophet Adam (PBUH) is the first Prophet in Islam. -Almighty God molded Adam using clay gathered from various parts of the earth, reflecting the diverse complexions and physical characteristics of his descendants.

Abu Musa reported that he heard God’s messenger say,

“God created Adam from a handful which he took from the whole of the earth.”

(Hadith)

Almighty God distinguished Adam, giving him unique attributes that set him apart from all other creations. Unlike the angels, Adam was granted free will, the power of perception and reasoning, and a capacity for creativity.

These qualities were given so that Adam could reflect on his true identity, see the truth, and his reason for existence.

It was vital that he thrived on earth and brought forth offspring who would remain steadfast in their assigned duty, to worship Almighty God, who was the first Prophet of God, and who was raised for the guidance of mankind.

God appointed him a Prophet and taught him the knowledge, and made him the leader of men.

2. Prophet Enoch (Idris) PBUH

Idris was a sincere Prophet in Ilsam and a servant of Almighty God. Hence, Almighty God chose him as a Prophet and Messenger and elected him as the ruler over the children of Adam.

Almighty God Almighty says:

And mention in the Book ˹O Prophet, the story of˺ Enoch. He was surely a man of truth and a Prophet.

[Quran 19:56]

Following the death of Prophet Idris, corruption began to increase rapidly again. Several generations later, with no Prophetic guidance, Shaitan succeeded in influencing the children of Adam to commit their first act of shirk (polytheism).

3. Prophet Noah PBUH:

After the death of Prophet Idris, Prophet Nuh (PBUH) was sent by Almighty God at a time when humanity had fallen deeply into idolatry after the loss of prophetic guidance. Chosen for his patience and eloquence, he called his people back to the worship of the one true God, reminding them through the signs of creation—night and day, the heavens and earth—that they should recognize their Creator and avoid idol worship.

Despite his long and sincere efforts, only a small group believed while most persisted in disbelief and rejected his message. Allah reassured him not to grieve over their denial, and ultimately, the disbelievers were punished with a great flood, while Prophet Nuh and the believers were saved. This story emphasizes patience in the call to the Almightyy God, firm belief in Tawheed, and the consequences of rejecting divine guidance.

Almighty God says:

“And when the people of Noah rejected the messengers, We drowned them, making them an example to humanity. And We have prepared a painful punishment for the wrongdoers.”

(Qur’an 25:37)

4. Prophet Hud PBUH

The people of ’Ad’ were renowned for their towering stature and physical fitness. They had a flair for building lofty constructions that surpassed those of neighboring tribes and nations, leading to an aura of arrogance and ignorance. And the few who ruled over the tribe were unjust, their power unchecked and unquestioned.

The Ad were not completely ignorant of the existence of Almighty God. They worshipped Almighty God alongside several other deities whom they considered gods. They crafted idols representing these gods and worshipped them alongside Almighty God. As a result, Almighty God chose to send a Prophet to guide them toward monotheism.

The Prophet assigned this crucial task was Prophet Hud, who belonged to the same tribe.

Almighty God Almighty says:

And to the people of ’Âd We sent their brother Hûd. He said, “O my people! Worship Almighty God. You have no god other than Him. You do nothing but fabricate lies ˹against Almighty God.

[Quran 11:50]

The punishment of the people of ‘Aad was their destruction by a fierce, violent wind sent by Almighty God after they denied their messenger, Hud.

5. Prophet Saleh PBUH

Prophet Saleh (PBUH), a descendant of Prophet Nuh, was sent by Almighty God to the people of Thamud, who respected him for his wisdom and integrity. He called them to worship Allah alone and abandon idolatry, emphasizing Tawheed, but despite knowing his honesty, they rejected his message out of attachment to their ancestral beliefs.

Almighty God says in the Qur’an:

“And to the people of Thamûd We sent their brother Ṣâliḥ. He said, ‘O my people! Worship Almighty God. You have no god other than Him

As a divine sign, they were given the she-camel, yet they defied the command of God by harming it, which led to their punishment. Ultimately, Almighty God destroyed them with a powerful blast and earthquake, leaving their civilization in ruin. Their destruction serves as a warning to all generations.

Ibn `Umar (may God be pleased with him) reported that when the Prophet ﷺ and his companions visited Al-Hijr, the dwellings of the Thamud, he admonished them:

“Do not pass by these people who are being tormented, without weeping, lest the punishment should befall you as it had befallen them.”

(Hadith Sharif)

This story serves as a clear lesson on the importance of monotheism, obedience to God, and the consequences of rejecting His messengers.

6. Prophet Abraham PBUH (IBRAHIM)

Prophet Abraham was born into an atypical family that not only worshipped idols but crafted them. Ibrahim was unlike the other children; he was not prone to falling victim to their idol-worshipping ways. He was a truth seeker, and his creator endowed him with intelligence.

Almighty God Almighty says:

Indeed, Abraham was a model of excellence: devoted to Almighty God, ˹perfectly˺ upright—not a polytheist—

[Quran 16:120]

Ibrahim logically demonstrated the ephemeral nature of all existing things except for the eternal oneness of Almighty God, who is responsible for nourishing and sustaining everything in every moment. He explained to them that while the sun, moon, and stars appeared and disappeared from time to time, Almighty God was always present and never lost sight of his creations.

The people of Ibrahim (peace be upon him) tried to burn him to get rid of him as a punishment for destroying the idols and calling them to worship Almighty God alone. They placed Ibrahim in the fire to burn him, but Almighty God saved His servant Ibrahim from the fire and made it cool and peaceful upon him, so it did not harm him.

Almighty God Almighty says:

We ordered, “O fire! Be cool and safe for Abraham!”

[Quran 21:69]

7. Prophet Lut PBUH

Prophet Lut (PBUH) was sent to the people of Sodom, a city known for widespread corruption, crime, and immoral practices, including homosexuality. Despite their wrongdoing, he remained steadfast in calling them to worship Almighty God and abandon their sins, firmly refusing to accept or participate in their actions. He warned them of severe consequences, but they persisted in their disobedience and rejected his message.

As a result, Almighty God saved Lut and the believers while destroying the city with a devastating punishment, overturning it and raining stones upon its people. This story highlights the importance of obedience to God, moral integrity, and the consequences of persistent wrongdoing.

8. Prophet Ishmael PBUH

Prophet Ismail (PBUH), the son of Prophet Ibrahim (PBUH) and Lady Hajar, was a man of remarkable character and a messenger of Almighty God.

Qur’an says:

“And mention in the Book ˹O Prophet, the story of˺ Ishmael. He was truly a man of his word, and was a messenger and a Prophet.”

(19:54)

He grew up among the tribe of Jurhum, learning their language and marrying from among them.

Almighty God commanded Prophet Ibrahim and Ismail to rebuild the Kaaba, the holiest site in Islam, using the remnants of Adam’s Ancient House. Ismail assisted his father in the construction, and the spring of Zamzam gushed forth at its location. The Kaaba remains the direction of prayer (Qiblah) and a symbol of Muslim unity and faith.

Qur’an says:

“And ˹remember˺ when Abraham raised the foundation of the House with Ishmael, ˹both praying,˺ ‘Our Lord! Accept ˹this˺ from us. You are indeed the All-Hearing, All-Knowing.’”

(2:127)

9. Prophet Isaac (ISHAQ) PBUH

Prophet Ishaq (AS) was a messenger of Almighty God and the second son of Ibrahim (AS).
During their old age, Ibrahim (AS) and his first wife Sarah (p.b.u.h) received the news of Ishaq (AS) from three angels sent in the form of humans.

Almighty God Almighty says:

We ˹later˺ gave him good news of Isaac—a Prophet, and one of the righteous.

[Quran 37:112]

10. Prophet Jacob (YAQUB) PBUH

-Prophet Yaqub descended from a line of devout Prophets of Almighty God and continued to carry the message of Oneness through his progeny. He was the son of Prophet Ishaq, and his grandfather was none other than Prophet Ibrahim.

-Yaaqub is remembered for his great strength of character, his complete submission to the will of God, and his firm and unwavering faith.

Almighty God Almighty says:

So after he had left them and what they worshipped besides Almighty God, We granted him Isaac and Jacob, and made each of them a Prophet.

[Quran 19:49]

11. Prophet Joseph (YUSUF) PBUH:

Prophet Yusuf (PBUH), the beloved son of Prophet Yaaqub (Jacob), was distinguished by his beauty, wisdom, and knowledge granted by Almighty God. Throughout his life, he faced severe trials, including betrayal by his brothers, being sold into slavery, and the temptation of Zulaikha, which he resisted with unwavering faith and integrity. Despite being unjustly imprisoned, Yusuf remained patient and steadfast until Almighty God granted him relief, elevating him to a position of authority in the land.

Upon reunion with his brothers, he expressed gratitude and acknowledged God’s mercy: “Are you really Joseph?” They replied ˹in shock˺. He said, “I am Joseph, and here is my brother ˹Benjamin˺! Almighty God has truly been gracious to us. Surely whoever is mindful ˹of Almighty God and patient, then certainly Almighty God never discounts the reward of the good-doers.”

(12:90)

This story emphasizes patience, integrity, and trust in Almighty God, showing that steadfastness and righteousness are ultimately rewarded.

12. Prophet Job (AYYUB) PBUH

Ayyub was a Prophet who was immensely blessed by Almighty God. He was strong and healthy, had large plots of land, abundant livestock, and a righteous and beautiful family. He was also a community leader who was highly respected and beloved by his people.

Despite his status and wealth, Ayyub was never arrogant; he was always humble. He readily helped those in need and constantly thanked and glorified Almighty God for everything he was blessed with. Prophet Ayyub went through many trials, but he remained patient and sought reward from Almighty God.

Almighty God Almighty says:

And ˹remember˺ when Job cried out to his Lord, “I have been touched with adversity, and You are the Most Merciful of the merciful.”

[Quran 21:83]

The story of Prophet Ayyub is one of adversity mixed with patience. It is easy to be a faithful servant of Almighty God when everything is going well, but his faith never faltered during difficult times, which is what makes him a remarkable being.

13. Prophet Shuaib (PBUH)

The story of Prophet Shu’aib unfolds in a region named Madyan. The Madyanites were not only dishonest in trade but also disbelievers, rejecting the existence of Almighty God and reportedly worshipping the woodlands and nature Gods.

Ushering a corrupt and haughty community to abandon their past beliefs and embrace a new way of life is undoubtedly not an easy task, especially given how their unethical business had long benefited them and would require significant sacrifice. But Prophet Suhaib was resolute in carrying out this mission of Almighty God and bringing others into the fold of Islam.

Almighty God Almighty says:

And to the people of Midian ˹We sent˺ their brother Shu’aib. He said, “O my people! Worship Almighty God, and hope for ˹the reward of˺ the Last Day. And do not go about spreading corruption in the land.”

[Quran 29:36]

14. Prophet Moses (MUSA) PBUH

Prophet Musa (PBUH) lived under the tyranny of Pharaoh in Egypt, where the Children of Israel were oppressed and enslaved, while many followed Pharaoh out of fear rather than true belief. From a young age, Musa reflected deeply on the signs of Almighty God in creation, which prepared him for Prophethood and his mission to guide his people from darkness to light.

He was uniquely honored by speaking directly with Almighty God in the sacred valley of Tuwa near Mount Sinai, earning the title Kaleemullah. His elevated status among the Prophets is further emphasized in the teachings of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. Overall, his story highlights deep faith, spiritual reflection, steadfastness, and a special closeness to Almighty God.

15. Prophet Aeron (HARUN) (PBUH)

Prophet Harun was born to a faithful Israelite family living in Egypt. He was born at a time when the Israelites were being severely oppressed under a tyrannical Egyptian Ruler.

-He is widely recognized as the elder brother of Prophet Musa.

Harun, on the other hand, was an eloquent speaker, so Musa implored Almighty God to appoint Harun as his helper.

Almighty God Almighty says:

And ˹so˺ my heart will be broken and my tongue will be tied. So send Aaron along ˹as a messenger˺.

[Quran 26:13]

16. Prophet Dhul-Kifl (PBUH)

The literal meaning of the name “Dhul-Kifl” is “possessor of the fold” or “possessor of, or giving, a double requital or portion.” This name signifies that he was a Prophet who gave more than what was required of him. He gave “double” or a multiple in his prayers, worship, and deeds. Whatever was required of him, he did more for the sake of pleasing Almighty God.

Another possible interpretation is that, as a Prophet of Almighty God, he bore double the responsibility. For example, one account suggests he was responsible for fasting during the day, devoting himself to prayer and worship during the night, and being a judge among the people. This required having complete mastery over his emotions and avoiding showcasing signs of anger.

Almighty God Almighty says:

And ˹remember˺ Ishmael, Enoch, and Ⱬul-Kifl.1 They were all steadfast.

[Quran 21:85]

17. Prophet David (DAWUD) (PBUH)

Dawud was a humble servant of Almighty God who did not allow pride to venture into his heart and forget the Almighty. This is when Almighty God bestowed Dawud with Prophethood. The Lord also gifted Dawud with many miracles that were not bestowed upon any other Prophet before or after him.

King Talut led the Israelite army, poised for battle against the formidable Jalut and his forces. Having endured severe losses to Jalut before, this impending battle stood as a pivotal moment in shaping the fate of Israel.

With a single pebble, Dawud defeated the mighty Jalut, whom all warriors feared:

Almighty God Almighty says:

So they defeated them by Almighty God’s Will, and David killed Goliath. And Almighty God blessed David with kingship and wisdom and taught him what He willed.

[Quran 2:251]

18. Prophet Solomon (SULAIMAN) (PBUH)

When Dawud passed away, he was succeeded by Sulaiman, who was chosen by Almighty God to carry forth the legacy of his dad’s Prophethood. He was bestowed with many gifts and remained a just and wise ruler over the Israelite nation.

Prophet Sulaiman ruled not only over humans, but also the Jinns and various animals. He was admired and loved by all as their leader.

Almighty God Almighty says:

And David was succeeded by Solomon, who said, “O people! We have been taught the language of birds, and been given everything ˹we need˺. This is indeed a great privilege.

[Quran 27:16]

Oblivious to the Prophet’s passing, the jinn continued to work tirelessly day in and day out. It wasn’t until some termites came and ate through his staff that Prophet Sulaiman’s body fell to the floor. Only then did the people come to know of his passing.

19. Prophet Ilyas (PBUH)

The Qur’anic commentators have made a few inferences based on this information given. It is believed Prophet Ilyas was a descendant of Prophet Harun and was appointed by Almighty God to teach tawheed to Bani Isra’il (children of Israel). They believe this was during a time when idol worship was increasing in the city of Ba’alabak.

Almighty God Almighty says:

And Elias was indeed one of the messengers.

[Quran 37:123]

20. Prophet Elisha (AL-YASA) (PBUH)

Almighty God sent Prophet Al-Yasa as a successor to Prophet Ilyas to help guide the children of Israel. He lived among his people and called upon them to obey the laws and commands of Almighty God.

He loved and was devoted to guiding his people on the right path. He was righteous and consistently showed humility and passion to do the right thing, in public and private.

Almighty God Almighty says:

Also remember Ishmael, Elisha, and Ⱬul-Kifl. All are among the best.

[Quran 38:48]

21. Prophet Yunus: (He is also called ‘’Dhul-Nun’’) (PBUH)

Prophet Yunus (PBUH), known as Dhul-Nun, was sent to the people of Nineveh, who were deeply engaged in idol worship and sin. Despite calling them to worship Almighty God alone and warning them of past punishments, they initially rejected him, leading Yunus to leave without divine permission—an act that displeased God.

After his departure, the people repented sincerely, and God accepted their repentance, sparing them from punishment. Meanwhile, Yunus was swallowed by a great whale, where, in complete darkness, he turned to God with a heartfelt supplication acknowledging his mistake. God accepted his repentance and saved him, demonstrating His mercy. The story ultimately emphasizes steadfastness, the power of sincere repentance, and the importance of turning to Almighty God in all circumstances.

22. Prophet Zachariah (PBUH)

Prophet Zakariyah was a righteous man of noble descent. He was among the Prophets sent to tread the blessed soil of Jerusalem, guiding the Children of Israel along the path of Almighty God. He was a man of humble means but always eager to help those in need.

The miracle of Prophet Zakariyah was that Almighty God answered his prayer by granting him a righteous son, Yahya, despite his old age and his wife’s infertility. Almighty God blessed him with Yahya and gave him a sign: he was unable to speak to people for three days except by gestures, so that he would continue glorifying and remembering his Lord abundantly. This miracle confirmed the fulfillment of the glad tidings about the coming of Yahya.

Almighty God Almighty says:

˹The angels announced,˺ “O Zachariah! Indeed, We give you the good news of ˹the birth of˺ a son, whose name will be John—a name We have not given to anyone before.”

[Quran 19:7]

23. Prophet John (YAHYA) (PBUH)

The birth of Prophet Yahya can be considered a miracle as Prophet Zakariyah’s wife was believed to be barren and was past childbearing age when the couple was blessed with him.

Prophet Yahya was unlike other children his age; when they preferred to play during their leisure time, Prophet Yahya busied himself with activities that expanded his knowledge.

Almighty God Almighty says:

˹It was later said,˺ “O John! Hold firmly to the Scriptures.” And We granted him wisdom while ˹he was still˺ a child,

[Quran 19:12]

24. Prophet Jesus (Isa) PBUH

Prophet Isa (PBUH) was miraculously born to Maryam (Mary) without a father, a sign of Almighty God’s power, similar to the creation of Adam.

Islamic teachings hold that he was not crucified; rather, it appeared so to his enemies.

Almighty God says:

“They neither killed nor crucified him—it was only made to appear so. They certainly did not kill him.” (4:157)

Isa’s status in Islam is that of a Prophet and messenger, not divine, and he never claimed to be God.

Almighty God says:

“The Messiah, son of Mary, was no more than a messenger. Many messengers had come and gone before him. His mother was a woman of truth. They both ate food. See how We make the signs clear to them, yet see how they are deluded ˹from the truth˺!”

(5:75

25. Prophet Muhammad PBUH (The Seal of the Prophets):

Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, is the Messenger of Almighty God, and the final Prophet of Islam. He is known as the final Prophet and messenger according to the Qur’an and Sunnah. He was also a diplomat, merchant, philosopher, orator, legislator, reformer, soldier, and general during his lifetime.

The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) was sent with the message of Islam at the age of forty. He spent thirteen years in Mecca calling people to the oneness of Almighty God, worshiping Him alone, and rejecting all forms of polytheism. After that, he migrated to Medina, accompanied by his noble companions, and together they built one of the greatest communities known to humanity.

He stayed in Medina for ten years, diligently conveying the message of his Lord. The Prophet passed away at the age of sixty-three, having fully delivered the message, fulfilled his trust, sincerely advised the nation, and struggled in the way of Almighty God with true dedication until death came to him.

Almighty God Almighty says:

So believe in Almighty God and His Messenger, the unlettered Prophet, who believes in Almighty God and His revelations. And follow him, so you may be ˹rightly˺ guided.

[Quran 7:158]
