Names and Attributes of The Creator
One of the wonderful Islamic laws is considering balance while building the Muslim character. For example, there are some of Allah’s most beautiful names that invoke hope; like The Merciful, The All-Forgiving and The Affectionate. On the other hand, there are names that invoke fear or concern; like The Superior and The Exalted in Might.
During the variety of actions of the people and in this life, the hearts change almost every second! Sometimes those hearts are broken, so they need hope. While other times they turn so proud and vanish, and need something to make them return back. So fear comes to do this job.
God knows the human being nature, and knows how to give the remedy for every problem. Let’s have a deep look at the “ Al-Azeez” meaning.
Meaning of The Exalted in Might ‘Al-Azeez’:
This Name has many meanings. It means power and might. Also, It means that no one can harm God and no one can escape from His power. The third meaning is The One whom you seek protection from. He gives you protection, and no one can protect you against Him. Allah (The Only God) says in the Qur’an:
Say, ‘In whose hand is the realm of all things – and He protects while none can protect against Him – if you should know?’ ” [Qur’an 23-88](1)
Moreover, He is the One who has honor and rank. This Name should give those who believe in it the sense of honor and security. God says in the Qur’an:
…And to Allah belongs [all] honor, and to His Messenger, and to the believers, but the hypocrites do not know.” [Qur’an 63-8](2)
True Muslims understand this meaning well. We see them do a lot of surprising things that unbelievers can not understand. For example, after the battle of Uhud, the Prophet (peace be upon him) ordered his companions to follow their enemies in spite of their wounds. They obeyed him, and when they started to move, some hypocrites told them that their enemies had prepared for killing them in order to make them fearful. But for those companions the matter was different.
As God says in the Qur’an:
Those to whom hypocrites said, ‘Indeed, the people have gathered against you, so fear them.’ But it [merely] increased them in faith, and they said, ‘Sufficient for us is Allah, and [He is] the best Disposer of affairs.’ (173) So they returned with favor from Allah and bounty, no harm having touched them. And they pursued the pleasure of Allah, and Allah is the possessor of great bounty.” [Qur’an 3-173:174](3)
If we believe in this name, we will try to improve our deeds in order to be accepted. We will believe that all those around us are just creatures like us and they are not worthy to be feared of. Only then, we will fear of disobeying God. Therefore, we will be happy in this life and in the Hereafter.
The significance of this name in the Qur’an:
The Exalted in Might ‘Al-Azeez’ comes many many times in the Qur’an. It often accompanies another name. For example, many times, it accompanies the name “The Wise”. In fact, this is very significant. In our world, it is common that power corrupts reason. But for God, the matter is different. Also, ‘Al-Azeez’ accompanies the name “The Merciful”. This is also of great significance, as it is often misconceived that to have power means to be hard-hearted. It also accompanies the name “The All-Forgiving”, and its significance is clear.
To conclude, if we believe in this name of God, and act according to what it asks us to do, our life will change. We will gain inner peace that no one denies its necessity!
Please, share us your thoughts about God. Do you believe in God, The One, The Creator of the heavens & the earth, Who has all such beautiful names & attributes?
