SUMMARY:

This article explains why God created Hell, framing it as an expression of divine justice and accountability that comforts believers while guiding them toward salvation through faith, good deeds, and repentance.

Is fear the first thing that comes to your mind when speaking about Hell or when faced with the question of whether God created Hell? After being shocked by the world events in Syria, Gaza and Sudan, one can only praise Allah who has created Hell. Mentioning Hell at this moment soothes the hearts of believers who wait for the Day of Judgement to see Allah’s Justice by watching those tyrants burning in Hell.

This article explains a fundamental matter of belief related to the unseen and accountability in the Hereafter. It addresses key questions such as did God create Hell, why Allah created it as part of His perfect justice and warning for humanity, and how a person can avoid Hell by balancing fear and hope, increasing good deeds, and seeking Allah’s mercy through repentance and faith. The Islamic belief in Hell is not meant for despair, but to guide believers toward righteousness, consistency in worship, and ultimately salvation.

Did God Create Hell?

Yes, Almighty Allah—the One True God—is the Creator of Hell, and only He has full knowledge of its reality. He is the Creator of everything, and nothing in existence is outside His creation or control. Therefore, the existence of Hell is not a human invention, but a created reality in the unseen world.

Hell is part of the unseen (al-ghayb), based on what is revealed in the Qur’an and the authentic Sunnah. It is a reality affirmed through divine revelation, not human speculation.

Since Allah is the Creator, He alone decides who deserves to enter or remain in Hell. Paradise and Hell do not belong to any human being, and no one can guarantee salvation by their own power or status. Entry into Paradise is not a “right” or a “green card”—it is purely by the mercy and justice of Allah. Also, no one can save another from Hell except Allah.

Why Did God Create Hell?

Do you think Hell is an evil thing? Do you think that we are attributing something evil to Allah by saying that Allah Almighty created it? To know the wisdom behind creating Hell, we should first understand the purpose of human existence.  Allah Almighty has created Hell as a punishment and mercy as well.

1. Hell is a Punishment

Allah has created Hell as a punishment for those who transgress against His Commands. Allah Almighty, the Creator, made this life a test for our faith and actions and declared that He Himself shall Judge us, by rewarding those who followed His path and punishing those who deviated. Remember that Iblees will not enter Hell because he is a disbeliever; he does believe in Allah. He will enter Hell because of his arrogance and disobedience. Allah Almighty says:

“Indeed, Hell is lying in ambush, as a home for the transgressors.”

[The Noble Quran, 78:21-22]

2. Hell is a Mercy!!

Mentioning Hell along with Paradise in the Quran and Sunnah is a mercy for the mindful people to flee to Allah Almighty and refrain from sins. Mentioning Hell is a mercy for all mankind and a mercy for the believers. Mentioning Hell helps us balance our connection with Allah Almighty and reflect on His wisdom.

(a) Hell is a Mercy for all Mankind, urging them to seek salvation

Warning people of hellfire and saving them from it is the definition of love and mercy. This is the message of Islam: to save mankind from Hellfire. I believe that fear and hope motivate the person to be close to Allah Almighty. In Islam, Muslims worship Allah through fear and hope.

Muslims believe that He Almighty is the Omnipotent and the Most Merciful. It is a false belief to commit sins, claiming that Allah, the Most Merciful, will shower you with His Mercy at the end because you think positively of Him. That’s why your faith is reflected through your beliefs and actions altogether.

(b) Hell is a Mercy for the Believers who experienced injustice in life

Hell is a mercy for the believers, as it soothes the hearts of the believers when seeing the disbelievers receiving their punishment on the Day of Judgment. It soothes the hearts of those who were tortured for their firm belief after watching the tyrants receive their eternal punishment in Hell.

How Can I Avoid Hell?

Do you search for steps to avoid Hell? Do you think that Allah, the Justice, will punish you for something you did not commit? After learning the reason for creating Hell, let’s know how we can reach our final destination peacefully. Let’s know more about Shahadah as your own gate to becoming a Muslim, the concept of fear and hope, and Hell as a final destination.

1. Belief in the Almighty One God is key to avoiding hell

Muslims believe in the promise of Allah that all those who witness that there is no God but Allah, and that Muhammad is His messenger, will enter Paradise.

2. Balance of Fear and Hope is essential for salvation from hell

In Islam, safety from Hell is built on a balanced foundation of fear and hope, both of which guide a person to the straight path.

Hope in Allah’s Mercy as the Key to Being Saved from Hell

A believer relies on Allah’s mercy, hoping that He will protect them from Hellfire. This hope strengthens trust in Allah, encourages repentance, and keeps the heart connected to the possibility of forgiveness and Paradise.

Fear of Hellfire as Protection from Sins That Lead to It

Fear in Islam is not hopelessness, but a protective awareness of Hell that prevents a person from falling into sins. It pushes believers to avoid wrongdoing, increase good deeds, and seek forgiveness. Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and his companions constantly sought protection from Hell and from actions that lead to it.

Staying on the Safe Path Away from Hell Through Consistent Deeds

No one knows which deed will be accepted and become the reason for salvation from Hell. For this reason, a believer continues between obedience and repentance, staying consistent and cautious in their actions.

The Prophet (ﷺ) used to say:

“O Allah, I ask You for Paradise and whatever brings me closer to it in words and actions. And I seek refuge in You from the Hellfire and whatever brings me closer to it in words and actions.”

[Ibn Majah, authenticated by Albani]

Thus, the reality of Hell is a divine warning that guides believers to combine fear and hope, ensuring they remain on the safe path that leads away from Hell and toward Allah’s mercy.

3. Final Destination of Hell is based on Human Will and Divine Justice

Some people will enter Hell forever, while others will enter to receive a punishment then return to Paradise. This is determined according to Allah’s Mercy and Justice. This also depends on the deeds of the servant and his beliefs. When talking about monotheism, Hell is mentioned for those who associate gods with Allah, as Allah Almighty says:

“Those who disbelieve in their Lord will suffer the punishment of Hell.”

(The Noble Quran, 67:6)

Hell is not just for the disbelievers who totally deny the oneness of Allah, but also for those who refuse to follow the divine commands, although they call themselves Muslims.

For example,

People who neglected prayers, did not feed the poor, and indulged in useless talk will be punished

as mentioned in the Noble Quran (74:26-27).

Conclusion

To conclude, the question “did God create Hell” reminds us that Hell is a real creation of Allah, part of His divine justice and warning to humanity. It is fine to feel afraid, but can you see the other side of the story?

Allah, the Creator, has created Hell as part of the unseen and placed it under His absolute authority. It serves as both a warning from sin and a manifestation of justice, while also highlighting Allah’s mercy in encouraging human reformation.

Allah promises Paradise for those who testify faith in Him and His Messenger, but no one knows which deed will be accepted. Therefore, the believer keeps striving in good deeds, between hope in Allah’s mercy and fear of His punishment.

May Allah protect us from Hell even for a moment and write us among the dwellers of Paradise. May Allah help us reach our best version. Do not hesitate to contact our team if you have any questions. If you are ready to make your Shahadah, our team is here for you!
