Better days are yet to come, and it is an honor and happiness for every Muslim to wait for the beginning of this holy and blessed month, Ramadan. Only the wise and smart person is the believer who takes benefits from every single minute of it and performs Dua during Ramadan.

Ramadan is a holy and very special month that all Muslims celebrate all over the world by performing many acts of worship. The most important of them are; performing fasting, performing obligatory prayers, voluntary prayers, doing charities, paying The Breaking-Fast Alms, and of course, making Dua, so that Almighty Allah empowers them and accepts their good deeds. 

What does supplication (Dua) mean ? 

Dua – an Arabic word written here in English letters.  In Islamic terminology, the word ‘Dua’ could be roughly translated into the meaning of “supplication”. Dua (Supplication), which means communicating while feeling humility, submissiveness, and obedience with Allah, Almighty God, The Creator, The Lord, The All-Knowing, and The All-Powerful.

Why Dua In Ramadan is the most important Activity?

There are many reasons why you should perform dua all the time in Ramadan:

1. Dua is the weapon of the believer:

Dua is one of the most powerful and effective act of worship a human being can engage in.  Dua has been called the weapon of the believer. It affirms a person’s belief in The One True God, Allah (SWT) and it shuns all forms of idolatry or polytheism

2. Dua is essentially submission to Allah

Dua is essentially submission to God and a manifestation of a person’s need for Allah. Dua means that the Muslim asks Almighty God for His help, mercy, forgiveness, and whatever goodness the Muslim is seeking.  When you lift your hands to supplicate Almighty Allah with Dua.

3. Feeling the connection to Almighty Allah

On the other hand, Dua is a Muslim way of feeling that connection to Almighty Allah at any time, in any place. Muslims should keep the supplications to Almighty Allah frequently throughout the day and night.  They raise their hands in supplication and ask for His help, mercy, and forgiveness. Dua incorporates praise, thanksgiving, hope, and calling on God to assist the one in need and grant his or her requests.

4.  Attaining the pleasure of Almighty Allah

Muslims also make Dua for attaining the pleasure of Almighty Allah, gaining both goodness and welfare in this world eternal happiness, and mercy of Almighty Allah in the hereafter for them and their brothers in Islam and for the whole Islamic nation. 

God Almighty said in the Noble Qur’an:

” وَإِذَا سَأَلَكَ عِبَادِي عَنِّي فَإِنِّي قَرِيبٌ ۖ أُجِيبُ دَعْوَةَ الدَّاعِ إِذَا دَعَانِ ۖ فَلْيَسْتَجِيبُوا لِي وَلْيُؤْمِنُوا بِي لَعَلَّهُمْ يَرْشُدُونَ “

” When My servants ask you “O Prophet” about Me: I am truly near. I respond to one’s prayer when they call upon Me. So let them respond “with obedience” to Me and believe in Me, perhaps they will be guided ˹to the Right Way”

Dua In Ramadan For Others (Family, friends, believers ..ETC)

Dua can be made for the individual, their family, friends, strangers, believers, and even the whole of humanity. When making the Dua it is acceptable to ask for good in this worldly life and in the hereafter. A believer who makes Dua should not hold back, but ask Almighty Allah to grant both the largest and smallest requests.

Prophet Muhammad, may the mercy and blessings of God be upon him, encouraged the believers to make Dua.  

“‏ مَا مِنْ عَبْدٍ مُسْلِمٍ يَدْعُو لأَخِيهِ بِظَهْرِ الْغَيْبِ إِلاَّ قَالَ الْمَلَكُ وَلَكَ بِمِثْلٍ”

Abu Dharr reported that Allah’s Messenger (PBUH) said:

“There is no believing servant who supplicates for his brother behind his back (in his absence) that the Angels do not say: The same be for you too.”

Sahih Muslim

What is the dua before Ramadan starts ?

The believer shall keep before Ramadan this Dua:

“اللهم بلغنا رمضان” 

“O Allah, bring us to Ramdan”

What is the Dua for beginning of Ramadan ?

The believer should say for beginning of Ramadan : 

“O Allah, bring us the new moon with security and Faith, with peace and in Islam, Our Lord and your Lord is Allah”.

اللّهُمَّ أَهِلَّـهُ عَلَيْـنا بِالأمْـنِ وَالإيمـان والسَّلامَـةِ والإسْلام، رَبُّنـا وَرَبُّكَ الله

Its also recommended Dua before Rajab, Shaaban, and Ramadan month starts to keep saying this Dua. Its considered a famous Dua before Rajab, Shabaan and Ramadan start. Read more about these two important months:

What is the Dua for breaking fast in Ramadan? (Before Iftar Dua)

The believer should keep saying this Dua specially at the minute of breaking fast saying: 

«اللَّهُمَّ لَكَ صَمْتُ وَعَلَى رِزْقِكَ أَفْطَرْتُ» . 

“O God, for Thee I have fasted and with Thy provision I have broken my fast”

Abu Dawud transmitted it

Also, he can say this Dua:

“ذَهَـبَ الظَّمَـأُ، وَابْتَلَّـتِ العُـروق، وَثَبَـتَ الأجْـرُ إِنْ شـاءَ الله”.  

 ” The thirst is gone, the veins are moistened, and the reward is confirmed, if Allah wills”.

Is there is a Dua to start the fast in Ramadan ?

There is no specific Dua to start the fast in Ramadan. You can Simply having the intention to fast the coming days of Ramadan should be sufficient. To perform a particular act that’s done to please Allah SWT alone is one of the most beloved acts.

Dua For Forgiveness in Ramadan?

Ramadan is the month of mercy and forgiveness, so the believers should keep seeking forgiveness from Allah, it can be from Ramadan daily Dua.

The Prophet (saw) used to pray for seeking the forgiveness in Ramadan:

اللَّهُمَّ إِنَّكَ عَفُوٌّ تُحِبُّ الْعَفْوَ فَاعْفُ عَنِّ
O Allah, You are Forgiving and love forgiveness, so forgive me

There is a Dua narrated by the Prophet (PBUH) for forgiveness in general:

“O Allah! Forgive me for those sins which I committed in the past and that which I may commit in the future, the sins that I have committed in privacy or in public and all the sins of which You are better aware of it than I am of myself. You are The One who bring forward and reprieve as You wish and indeed You are over all things capable”.

” اللَّهُمَّ اغْفِرْ لِي مَا قَدَّمْتُ وَمَا أَخَّرْتُ، وَمَا أَسْرَرْتُ وَمَا أَعْلَنْتُ وَمَا أَنْتَ أَعْلَمُ بِهِ مِنِّي، أَنْتَ المُقَدِّمُ وَأَنْتَ المُؤَخِّرُ وَأَنْتَ عَلَى كُلِّ شَيْءٍ قَدِير”

Is there any Dua during the first ten days of Ramadan?

There is no specific dua during the first ten days of Ramadan. You can make dua for the first 10 days of Ramadan with whatever you want. Especially, ask Allah to help you worship Him in Ramadan. 

Is there any Ramadan suhoor Dua?

With regard to suhur, there is no specific Dua to be said before having Suhur meal (supper). What is prescribed is to say Bismillah at the beginning and to praise Him when one stops eating, as should be done at every meal. 

Still, the one who delays his sahur until the last third of the night also catches up with the time of the divine descent, and this is a time when Duas are answered.

What are the best times for making Dua during Ramadan ?

Any time during Ramadan’s days and nights, Muslims should do their supplications because every single minute in Ramadan is a great chance that may Allah Accept these supplications. From the most important time should be considered that Almighty Allah Accept supplications are:

  1. The time Before breaking the fast.
  2. During the last third of the night.
  3. When Adhan is Called. 
  4. Between Adhan and Iqama (calling to congregational prayers.
  5. After dawn prayer till sunrise.

However, if your Dua was matching anytime on a certain night Ramadan, which is called The Night of Decree ” laylat-ul-Qadr”, Allah Had Promised their righteous deeds to accept the Duas and supplications that may change the whole destiny of the duplicators.

What is the virtue of The Night of Decree ” laylat-ul-Qadr ” ?

Although scholars have opinions regarding the exact date relates to The Night of Decree “laylat-ul-Qadr “ such as it is in the last ten nights, the exact time, by the wisdom of Allah (SWT) remains unknown. Hence, it is encouraged for every believer to recite the above supplication repeatedly every night in the nights of Ramadan.

Beyond reciting this supplication upon seeking The Night of Decree, Muslims also make it a practice to supplicate Allah with this Dua, as it is the most important and the best Dua during Ramdan, so keep saying this Dua during the last 10 days of Ramadan:

 “O Allah, You are indeed The Most Forgiving and You love to forgive, so forgive me.” 

عائشة رضي الله عنها قالت‏:‏ قلت‏:‏ يا رسول الله أرأيت إن علمت أي ليلة القدر ما أقول فيها‏؟‏ قال‏:‏ ‏ “‏قولي‏:‏ اللهم إنك عفو تحب العفو فاعفُ عني‏”

How should the believer perform Dua ?

Start your supplication by praising God, then by praying for the messenger of Allah, then asking forgiveness for your sins, then supplication to Allah Almighty by His most Beautiful Names and Supreme Attributes. Read also: What should I do after Ramadan?

Is there any recommended Dua end of Ramadan? 

No, there is no evidence that Prophet Muhammad kept saying a special Dua for the end of Ramadan.
